SCC Students Honored at Ceremony in Olympia

SCC students Tess Rosean and Teressa Sevcik were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements by Governor Christine Gregoire on Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Olympia, Washington.

As nominees to the All-Washington Academic Team, Tess and Teressa received $750 scholarships, funded by Keybank and NELA (Northwest Education Loan Association). In addition, they received personal congratulations from Governor Gregoire and keepsake medallions.

Tess Rosean has a 3.70 GPA and is enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program here at SCC. As a dislocated worker who was laid off from Sacred Heart Medical Center, Tess wanted a career where she could still draw on her 30 years of nursing experience. She also volunteers at college-wide blood drives and tutors students in medical terminology and coding.

Teressa Sevcik has a 3.71 GPA and is a General Business major. Having undergone 10 surgeries in less than 10 years, including open heart and cancer procedures, Teressa is on disability. Wanting to give back to her community for the care and "the quality of life I may not otherwise have had," Teressa is planning a career as a rehabilitation technician.

Both Tess and Teressa are members of Beta Epsilon Iota, the SCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, which helps sponsor the annual academic teams. For more information on BEI, please contact one of the chapter's faculty advisors, Tami Absalonson or Jim Scheidegger at 533-8045.
